Birth month colors

Twelve months, twelve traditional colors, and the swatch each one is usually drawn from.

Ask two websites what the color for a birth month is and you will often get two different answers, because they are answering two different questions. The list most people mean is the birthstone tradition: one stone per month, and a color read off that stone. Colorstrology took the same month idea and gave each month a name and a description of its own. This site does something else again - it maps all 366 days of the year, so a color belongs to a date rather than to a month.

The table below gives the birthstone color for each month, and next to it the month page on this site, where every day in that month has its own color, hex code and reading. Nothing here is a prediction; the stones are a naming tradition and the colors on this site were chosen for the calendar.

The twelve birth month colors

The swatch is a representative hue of the stone, not a standard: garnets range from brown-red to violet, and opals can be almost any color at all.

Month Birthstone This site
January Garnet January 1 January Ironwork
February Amethyst February 1 Basalt Evening
March Aquamarine March 1 First Thaw Blush

May Emerald May 1 Violet Hour Glass

July Ruby July 1 Wheatfield Glow
August Peridot August 1 Willow Drizzle
September Sapphire September 1 Barley Afternoon

November Topaz November 1 Wintered Pine Ledge
December Turquoise December 1 First Flake

Why the answers disagree

Birthstone colors

One stone is published for each month - garnet for January, amethyst for February, and so on - and the color is read off the stone. The list is a naming tradition rather than a standard, so older and newer versions of it differ.

Colorstrology-style month colors

The same month idea with a custom name and a written description for each month. Tools that publish this list each write their own names and descriptions, so two of them rarely agree word for word.

This site: one color per day

The calendar is a leap-year palette, so all 366 days have their own named color, hex code, palette and reading. A month page lists its days; a date always returns the same color; a year is deliberately not part of the input.

This chart is per day, not per month

A month color is one answer for thirty days. If you know your date, you can have the answer that belongs to it: open your month page, pick your day, and you get that day's color, its hex, RGB and HSL values, the tints and shades built from it and the reading written for it.

Questions people ask about birth month colors

What is my birth month color?

Find your month in the table above. The color most people mean is the one read off that month's birthstone - garnet red for January, amethyst purple for February, and so on. This site's own palette goes further and gives every day of the month its own color and hex code.

Is there a color for every birthday, not just every month?

Yes, and that is what this site is for. All 366 days of the year have their own named color with a hex code, a color word, the palette built around it and a short reading, including 29 February.

What about my birth year?

This chart is a month-and-day calendar, so a year is not part of the answer. Turning a year into a color needs a rule for converting the number, and different tools use different rules, which is one reason their results disagree with each other.

Are the birthstone colors official?

No single body publishes them. The modern list is a long-published tradition, several versions of it are in circulation, and this site does not claim any of them as a standard. The swatch next to each stone here is our own representative hue.
